History

The Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (GEBT) at Jashore University of Science and Technology was inaugurated in 2009 and commenced academic activities with an inaugural cohort of forty students and a faculty of four; its initial operations were overseen on a temporary basis by the founding chairman, Dr. Md. Anisur Rahman, Associate Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Marine Biosciences, who led the department from 31 December 2009 until 13 March 2010, after which Dr. Shaikh Mizanur Rahman, Associate Professor in GEBT, headed the chair on 14 March 2010. Established to build local capacity to address Bangladesh’s most pressing challenges including poverty, unemployment, public‑health deficits and environmental degradation and to respond to global threats such as climate change, pandemic risk and economic instability, the department was founded with the clear mission of training future leaders in molecular biology, genetic improvement, diagnostics, bioremediation and bio-entrepreneurship, thereby strengthening agricultural productivity in a predominantly agrarian economy, advancing affordable healthcare solutions, mitigating pollution through biotechnological innovation, and fostering sustainable industry and employment through science‑driven enterprise.
